The Velvet Dove
On a cool Christmas Eve,
The sleigh was all packed,
And a small Velvet Dove
Was perched on the back.
Around it’s soft neck
Was a letter that read;
‘I’ll be with you each night
As you sleep in your bed.’
All the magical gifts
For the worlds sleeping kids,
Were alive for the night,
Til’ the Christmas daylight.
But a bump in the sky,
Threw the Velvet Dove high
And it fell straight below,
Landing deep in the snow.
A little Black Raven
Had woken in fright,
“Why did you land here?
And where is your flight?!”
“I am but a toy”,
The Velvet Dove cried,
“And I need to get home
Before the Christmas daylight”
“Well I will not help
For you are no bird.
And I was asleep
Til’ my dreams you stirred!”
So the Velvet Dove left-
Went on searching alone,
Until it was stopped
By a fence in the road.
And just as it thought
It couldn’t get round,
A beautiful Fox
Appeared from the ground.
“Excuse me Miss Fox,
Can you help me get past?”
And with a big smile,
She ran over fast.
The Velvet Dove sobbed
“I don’t know where to go”
The Fox said “I’ll help you”
And pulled it below.
Beneath frozen ground
Were three cubs in bed,
So silently out the back hole
It was led.
The Fox sweetly said
“Oh Small Velvet Dove,
You should be a toy
For someone to love.
The nights can be scary.
The dark can be too,
But a child will sleep well,
When cuddling you!”
The Velvet Dove thanked her,
And left through the snow,
But soon came to a river-
With nowhere to go.
And just as it thought
It’d be stranded there,
Across the cold water
Stood a big Furry Bear.
“Would you like some help?
I can take you across.”
The big bear called right out,
“You look a bit lost”.
The Velvet Dove smiled
As the Bear walked through water.
And in his big paws,
Bear carried it over.
The Bear softly spoke
“Oh Small Velvet Dove,
You should be a toy
For someone to love.
For when I was small
I was afraid of the night,
But with you by their side
That child will sleep tight”.
And pecking Bear’s cheek
The Velvet Dove went,
And felt it was close
To the house it was sent.
And there in the distance
Through soft falling snow,
Christmas lights twinkled-
It knew it was home.
The stars were now fading,
With sun peeking through.
Morning was close,
But the Velvet Dove knew
It had little time
Til’ it’s magic was gone-
It must get inside,
Before Christmas dawn.
And just as it thought,
It’d’d lost all it’s hope,
Beside it flew down
That Raven he’d woke.
“I’m sorry I left you
So lost and alone.
Though I struggle to sleep,
You deserve a good home.”
And Raven then said:
“Oh Small Velvet Dove,
You should be a toy
For someone to love.
If I had one like you
Inside of my nest
I’d have wonderful dreams
And I’d look forward to rest!”.
But the Velvet Dove changed
As the Christmas sun came,
And with a calm smile
Turned to a toy again.
Without hesitation,
Raven picked up the Dove
And beneath the tree
Placed it with love.
And later that night,
Asleep in the bed,
The Velvet Dove lay
With it’s new best friend.
The End.
